media for education, development and social change
I produce audiovisual and interactive media that explains, educates and inspires.
Born in Bangkok, raised in Virginia, based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
I'm a Thai-American living in Tanzania. I'm co-founder and managing director of Ubongo,
a Tanzanian social enterprise that creates fun, localized edutainment for learners in Africa.
We produce the interactive cartoon series Ubongo Kids which
teaches math through fun, local stories on Tanzanian TV. Students watching the series can interact live via SMS.
We'll soon be expanding across Africa (and hopefully the world), bringing Ubongo Kids to learners everywhere!
I also make a variety of digital media with a focus on education, science and development. I love
football (of the soccer variety) and telling inspiring stories.
As MD of Ubongo and series producer of Ubongo Kids,
I do whatever needs to get done to produce the show and keep the company going! That includes managing
our awesome team in Dar es Salaam,
co-writing the Ubongo Kids screenplays, promoting and marketing the series... and doing everything
else in between, from accounting to social media.
In the past I've produced
podcasts, radio packages and
videos on science and development topics for the BBC,
The Guardian and many other organizations from the London Science Museum to the Taarifa mapping platform.
Previously I worked as Content Maestro for The Virtual School .
There I scoped an online course to cover the UK GCSE science & maths curriculum,
then worked with 30 digital media interns to take teachers' audio explanations and animate them into engaging learning videos.
I specialize in making content that explains complex topics simply. I regularly teach workshops on instructional design and educational media production.
I speak English, Kiswahili, Thai and a little bit of French and Mandarin.
